Home Page Beuzeville Genealogy Histories & Stories
|
Histories and StoriesThis is a collection from various sources that provides information about the Hewletts, Beuzevilles and Roussels. Also, there is a page about Huguenots: their history and context. 'Family Notes' by Emma Mary Byles OBE is an account of the history of various branches of this family as she knew it. Her sources are derived from various family members during the course of her lifetime. It is a comprehensive document and is enlivened with family stories and myths. The biography of Rev. James Philip Hewlett I is a detailed account of his life, his theology, his sense of social justice and his final illness. The author is unknown but is obviously someone who knew him intimately. This document has come into my hands relatively recently and provides many missing links regarding his life. 'Meanderings' was written by Esther Beuzeville Alden (Hewlett), a daughter of Rev. James Philip Hewlett II. This is an account of her parents and their origins, and details her own life. It is honest and the writer confronts with courage many of the vicissitudes of her experiences. It has been recently acquired. 'Flight from France' is an account, written by Esther Hewlett, of the escape made by Marie Beuzeville, her mother and brothers, from Normandy to England after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. 'A Quiet By-Lane' written by Gilbert Wiblin has been published during the 1930s by the London Huguenot Society and is a history of the family. It is reproduced with permission from the Society. 'Refugees in London' contains stories which provide the reader with a sense of the values and perspectives of French Huguenots who migrated to London after the revocation of the 'Edict of Nantes'. It includes details of the Silk Manufactory established and managed by Beuzevilles/Barbets/Levesques. 'Huguenots' is a brief outline of Huguenot history and the background to the migration of French Protestants after the revocation of the edict of Nantes. It also details the symbolism of the Huguenot Cross History of the Silk Weaving Business at 24 Steward Steward Street, Spitalfields.
